Kitchen Fires
The most common type of fire in the house is a kitchen fire. In fact, approximately two out of five fires in the home start when there is food being cooked in the kitchen. These kitchen fires don’t just cause 44% of home fires, they are also responsible for 15% of home fire fatalities and 38% of home fire related injuries. We’ve all tried to do multiple tasks while cooking, but ultimately this is often what causes this extremely high number of home fires that require people to need fire restoration and smoke restoration services. This is especially true when frying as oil and grease fires are extremely dangerous, so when frying it’s important to make sure that is your priority.
Electrical Fires
Unfortunately, APR Restoration has seen our fair share of home electrical fires in the Raleigh, Wilmington, New Bern, Cary, Jacksonville, Fuquay-Varina areas. These electrical fires account for approximately 51,000 fires every year and are responsible for more than 500 deaths, upwards of 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damages every year. You may want to pay especially close attention if you have an older home. Often modern appliances are placed in older homes that are not equipment with the necessary wiring to support those home accessories. Finally, note that you should always pay attention to the recommended wattage for your lighting fixtures, as the use of a bulb utilize a higher wattage is a fire hazard.
Heater Fires
More common in the winter, heating equipment is another leading cause of house fires, on average causing about 52,000 home fires every year. This includes many from portable electric space heaters. A major part of preventing these fires is making sure you only use one heater per electrical circuit. Additionally, if you are using an extension cord you want to be sure it is not overly-warn and is still of good quality. Finally, you want to be careful how close you place your portable space heaters to flammable objects such as blankets or flammable furniture.
